What a Filipino is like; Belief and Traditions in Selected Philippine Plays.
Along with so many plays that we had discussed, I have come to realize that Philippine plays doesn't only aim to entertain it's readers and to express what the authors think of. The Philippine plays has a deeper meaning that we should understand more. As a reader, we should have a deeper understanding of what we had read and we should also relate things in reality. So that, we will have a better perception of what the author is trying to say in it's works.
The Philippine plays show common belief and tradition of a Filipino. One of the common belief is that, we Filipino believe that everything that is immoral activity is considered as bad no matter what are the reason behind of doing it. This belief is shown in the play " The World is an Apple", wherein Mario steal a single apple from his work that he plans to give it to his daughter, Tita. This action of Mario is not accepted in our society and this makes Mario lost his job. Another belief and tradition is that, we Filipinos believe that once you are already married or committed in a relationship, you are no longer entitled to have a romantic relationship with other people. If this sacred commitment will break and you'll have an another relationship, expect what the society will judge you. This scenarios happen in the plays " Three Rats " and " Sabina ". In Sabina, Mr. George, who is already a married man, had a secret relationship with another woman named Sabina. Their relationship is a secret from everyone because the two of them are afraid of what the society will say to them.While in Three Rats, there is also a wrong established relationship since Nita is having a secret affair with it's husband's best friend named Adrian. But later on George, Nita's husband, had noticed and confirmed this secret relationship. The two relationship in the two plays ended up as bad as what they had done, some of the important characters died likewise with their relationship. In Sabina, Sabina committed suicide and in Three Rats, George kills his wife and Adrian and he committed suicide also. We Filipinos also have a belief and tradition of having a strong faith in God. We believe that all of the difficulties that we face in life are only challenges and we are being only tested by God and eventually, we can surpass to it. This belief and tradition is shown in the plays, " The World is an Apple" and " Sepang Loca' . We Filipinos also have this tradition that we tend to imitate what other cultures have, this happens in the play " The New Yorker in Tondo". In this play, Kikay also called as franchesca, happens to be a stranger in her own hometown, Tondo. She is used of what she is doing in New York while she is studying their and she imitates it and bring it back in her own hometown.
In these different plays, the author shows of what kind of people Filipinos are by showing of our common belief and traditions through their masterpiece.
